Five Over Four and a Door Transformation
In Atlanta, it is common to find homes built with the traditional “five, four and a door” configuration. What is this you may ask. Simply stated, it is an architectural style where the main section of the home has five windows symmetrically aligned across the front of the second floor, while two windows flank either side of the entry door on the first floor. Although there are some variations, the interiors of these traditional homes are fairly consistent. The first floor is typically compartmentalized into four living areas centered around the foyer, front stairs, back hall, powder room and basement stairs. All the bedrooms are generally found on the second floor with a hall bath serving the secondary bedrooms, while the master has its own, relatively small bathroom.
Consolidating & Reconfiguring
by Weidmann Remodeling
The Times They Are A Changin’
As needs have changed, new home construction has trended towards more open floor plans, first floor bedrooms, larger master baths, bigger closets, and dedicated bathrooms for secondary bedrooms. In turn, this has led owners of older residences to investigate the potential to remodel their homes to incorporate some or all of these features. Working through the constraints of a five, four and a door, this project represents the end result of this process. Completed in phases, Weidmann helped the homeowners achieve their objectives by consolidating and reconfiguring the available space on both levels, with only a small amount of square footage added to the home. While we have done dozens of these projects, each one is unique and this one is no exception.
