Let the Light Shine In
No matter what style kitchen you have, a window above the sink is always a good thing. Whether you have a kitchen that is sleek & modern or more traditional in style, letting more natural light in is a bonus. Lots of windows are especially nice when there’s a spectacular view. It may even make your time standing at the sink washing dishes a little more pleasant. A large bank of windows is a standout feature for most rooms, it is the new direction in the “Open Kitchen Floor Plan.” If you don’t have a window over your sink, consider adding a large, bold arch creating style and a focal point from the kitchen to an adjoining room. Of course, the bigger and bolder the opening, the less space flanking it. But don’t worry; just take the cabinets to the ceiling or, better yet, incorporate storage in a kitchen island or on another wall.
By minimizing or eliminating upper cabinets in a kitchen, you will visually open the room. And, it is still possible to get the storage you need. In recent projects we have devoted one wall entirely to full-height storage, creating streamlined rooms with fantastic views. Maximizing the storage will make the kitchen feel more open and less cluttered. In this new approach the open floor plan, the kitchen opens up to both the interior of the home as well as outside living areas.
